Plainfield, IN- Saturday April 2nd marked the first trip for the Amsoil USAC National Sprint Car Series to Lawrenceburg Speedway in Lawrenceburg, IN for the year. The season opener for "The Burg" hosted a strong field of 34 cars. A cold dreary day with 50 mph wind gusts made for less than perfect track conditions. Dust was rolling in hot laps as can be expected on such a windy day. Chad Boespflug drew a late pill for ProSource Qualifying going out 23rd. Boespflug laid down a lap of 14.4 earning him a 10th place time overall and a spot in the heat race inversion.
The heat race inversion put Boespflug starting 4th in Amsoil USAC Heat Race #2 sponsored by Benic Enterprises. Boespflug charged into second place tailing veteran driver Jon Stanbrough. A caution just after halfway bunched the field back together. Boespflug once again chased down the leader closing the gap between them each corner. On the final lap Boespflug pulled off a picture perfect slidejob in turn one to take over the lead from Stanbrough. Boespflug held on to the lead and picked up the heat race win.
Boespflug's qualifying and heat race efforts earned him a starting spot within the top 10 lining up 9th for the 30 lap AMain event. Boespflug and the NineEight Motorsports / EZR team made adjustments just before heading out for the feature event as they witnessed the track beginning to take rubber in the BMain. A complete change in track conditions saw the racing surface quickly transition from two groves to one lane around the bottom. Boespflug was able to race into the 5th position before filling in to a follow the leader type of track. Unfortunately Boespflug and 8 others in the top 10 fell victim to the rubbered down racetrack. Blown tires as a result began just after halfway for fellow competitors. With approximately 10 laps remaining the rubber defeated Boespflug as well blowing a right rear while running a strong 5th. The track crew took Boespflug to the designated work area where the team went to work quickly to change the tire and get him back out in the allotted time. Unfortunately the designated work area was one lane and backed up with a fellow competitor that wasn't done in time blocking the way to the track. One USAC official looked for an opening to get Boespflug pushed out in time, but there was just no where to go so he was unable to restart. The work area was finally cleared and they pushed him out the following yellow, but was informed shortly after he had fallen a lap down as a result of the blocked work area. The cards just were not in Boespflug's favor during the feature Saturday night.
"I'm frustrated and disappointed with the outcome Saturday given the circumstances in the work area. My guys worked hard all night and in the heat of the moment to get me back out of the work area on time. With no where to go it was out of our control and our night was unfortunately cut short."
Boespflug will be back in action Saturday at Lincoln Park Speedway for the MSCS Season Opener in the NineEight Motorsports / EZR 98e. The Bill Gardner Indiana Open Wheel Racin' Fest will also include a large fireworks display put on by LPS.
